Newton's Point of View
The World Through the Eyes of a Dog
I had the pleasure of babysitting Newton, a rescued pit bull. For most rescued animals their past is unknown. In Newton’s case he must have suffered the unimaginable evidenced by the many scars on his body. Due to his insecurities, he remained on a blanket in my living room his entire stay.
Because he was overly muscular, whenever he greeted me his front legs did a sought of jig, hitting the floor as though he were river dancing. At first I hadn’t noticed, but he would do this river dance each time I entered the room. A short walk to get the mail, put out the garbage or run upstairs for a few seconds guaranteed the same result.
During his stay I would catch Newton sleepy-eyed gazing at nothing in particular. This made me wonder — what was he thinking. Perhaps he was seeking the answer to his existence or contemplating the heavens — or thankful he was safe and being cared for.
Newton opened my heart to a world filled with forgiveness, innocence and joy. The following pages are a tribute to this little guy.
My name is Newton and I’ve been told that I am a dog. I stand on four legs which is quite different from my owners. They stand on only two legs.
From the time I was a puppy they taught me how to behave and what rules to follow. As I learned my place in the world, I wondered why certain things were the way they were.
For instance,
An early memory of mine is when I lived in a clear box. Large two-legged creatures looked in at me. Some would bang on the glass even as I slept.
My new space was bigger than the clear box. There were so many new and unusual smells to explore. Unfortunately, I was placed behind bars and not allowed to roam freely.
